evaluation activity 7

The preliminary task was a tester for us to understand which camera angles were appropriate for making are two minutes to look realistic and work well. I learnt the different types of camera shots and what they are mainly used for and that using a variety of shots will make the footage better than sticking to only two camera angle shots. I learnt about 180 degree rule that if you cross the line it will confuse the audience and will lose interest. We struggled to keep the 180 degree rule because as we was focusing on the different shots and occupied we had to remember that the person controlling that camera was only allow to move in certain points or it wouldnt work well and the perspective would completely different. We had some faults in the end footage of having props appearing and disappearing.

The preliminary task was a tough one for my group because we wanted to use a variety of shots but we needed to make sure that when editing them and getting them combind that it wouldnt jump and we wanted to have a good story line to stick to so that we could expand it and experiment with camera work. We wanted there to be conversation as we wanted the effect of over the shoulder shot. We used a variety of shots that i wouldnt of before used such as high angle, low angle, canted angle which is an extraordinary angle such as slightly tilted. We used alot of medium shots, long shots and close up shots depending on what stage we was shooting such as when they were speaking we wanted to be close to them so that they were the main focus that having them in a long shot and that they were hard to see and the background obstructed the person as they were filling the shot more.

We did very well when it came to editing, we made sure that we cut the shots at the right points so when it went to the next one it would smooth go straight into it like that were two different shots. We  had to problems with the camera work where the person shaked a little bit but it wasnt that obviously but that is something we learnt that we needed to keep that camera sure to make it look professional. We also knew that background sounds that werent ment to be included were bad because it wouldnt be right and would be unprofessional so we made sure we did the filming at a time that no one would be around to effect it. We didnt add any music because we hadnt learnt about how to include it and the use of no sound tracks worked but we wanted to experiment in our opening two minutes as we were chosing a genre which needed to some music to fill the atmosphere.

With the dialogue part of the filming we went along with it as we was shooting and it was a short shot proceedure because if we shot them for too long that the person would start babbling and wouldnt making sense so we chose the right choice of short shots which would then be combinded together through editing to make about a 30 or more second discussion. We knew that to make it safer that we would script what the person says than doing it then and there because we wanted her to say the right thing which would make an effect and understand to what was happening in the that point in the opening two minutes.

The similar thing between our preliminary task and the opening two minutes is that we used mostly the same camera shots but we should have been more daring shots because we stuck to something we felt comfortable with than going out of it and trying to get more exciting shots which could build more tension but we did use some good shots that did bring tension to the opening two minutes. Another similarity is that we focused on one character and then another one introduced at the end aswell we had a walking theme because walking is simple to shoot and you can use many shots with that high, low, close, medium and long and it will wont look weird.

The difference is that we used more effects in our opening two minutes than our preliminary tasks because i found out you could fade in and out of shots that also cutting the shots because we knew that in some shots cutting it will just cause there to be a jump so using the effect of fading out black and back in to the next shot looks like weve skipped a few seconds of the film and got to a different point which worked well. I knew that we would need some effects like i decided using black and white theme would fit perfectly with our genre horror its a dule appearance which gives a negative atmosphere for everything thats happening we want it too look negative.

evaluation task 6

This is the equipment which we used to create our opening two minutes, we didnt use much all we used was adobe premiere elements 10 which is accessed on a computer in our media classroom, blogger and a SLR camera.

With the camera it was effective because it was a good quality picture which ment that it looked professional the shots were more HD when using my personal camera than a camera it also ment that i knew how to use it and play around with the settings on my camera and change things to fit the shots. I also was able to use zoom on my camera and still have a decent shot when with the school cameras you would have to move around with how close you wanted the shot to get a non blurry picture.

I then went onto adobe premiere element 10 which is where i took my completed shots and organised and edited on adobe this software is the best to use as it is personally for film footage and creating a short or long movie. I think that it was hard to use because i hadnt used it before but with help i got the gyst and was able to cut the shots to combind them and make the follow through smoothly and add effect which would help the shots look more realistic.

I then used blogger which is where i recorded everything that i had done which led me up to my final piece of film my opening two minutes. I used it to keep notes and testers of ideas which if i wanted to change remember what i did and why. If i changed my mind i would include it in a post and then could understand why it was a good choice not to proceed with including that piece, prop or character in my work.

evaluation activity 4

My target audience which my film is aimed at is teenagers, both male and female which mean it will be a wider group that will want to come and watch it. The reason we chose this as our target audience is because that we are the same age which means we know what appeals to them. Both genders enjoy horrors its a popular genre that most people go for because they like the thrill and exciting which is bought throughout the films that have been shown before.

We have also put characters in the film similar age and it means that we can get the audience to relate to the character and be part of the film. We also thought about who are the people that would have time to go and watch a film in the cinema and teenagers go to cinema more frequently than any other audience. We also made our film a 15 so that we could get more teenagers in and that it wouldnt cause any fear or harm to them as some horrors give teenagers nightmare and put them off.

We also thought that teenager tend to go in groups to the cinema which means were be getting big quantities going. We could appeal to young adults aswell because they aswell enjoy horrors just as much as teenages do. They are still young and going out having a good time they would also take to go see a good horror film. We needed our opening two minutes to really leave them wanting to find out more because opening two minutes really sells the film because if they are not interested in the first two minutes than they might not enjoy the rest of the film. We need scary creepy characters and a setting that is stereotypically a place of killings and kidnappings.

evaluation activity 2

I have chose this screenshot to evaluate because it shows the two characters which are shown in the opening two minutes and i can explain why they were chosen to be shown in the opening two minutes than any other.

I wanted to talk about the pale one which is the character in the background the miss figured male figure that follows this young innocent girl home. In most films there's a vunerable female character alone in a open area that can easily be attacked. We wanted to relate our opening two minutes on a character called slenderman a  faceless figure that makes people disappear without a trace and have no explanation of what happened to them. We chose this character to relate to that person because our social group which is our own age 15+  and audience would understand what its like at that age how shy and vunerable females under age 15 are like and would know that they are an easy target to attack because they are defenseless and especially in a open place like the mill pond which is why i chose it than place it in a town or a school. Even if they do not know who the person is most horror films have mysterious killers that attack in certain points and we stuck to the tradition of stereotypes such as young innocent females and having countryside alleyway types to have the attackings in.

here is a example of slenderman his always hiding in the shadows and always folowing someone but they are oblivious of his presence. The similarites is that they both are wearing similar costumes as they are wearing black suits and have white faceless appearances which means that people can identify who it is in our opening two minutes. The difference that we did with our is usually he doesnt get too close to his victims but with ours to bring more impact when she turned back around he was up close which ment that the audience could analyse his appearance and see that he was the villan.

evaluation activity 1

This first screenshot is very open to the fact that the character is further away from where we are shotting we have chosen a long shot to start the film to show the audience the setting and surrounding which the film begins in. We also wanted to start the film suspicious and calm so that the tension builds up through each shot. The character is straight away shown calm and normal walking home as a normal day to day routine. In this shot the camera follows her as she walks past the camera until her phone rings which was we added in and the shot changes.

This shot here is zoomed in this gives the audience time to look at the main character and what she is wearing. She is shown to be young child that has just finished school. The props used show the time that its set in which is nowaday 2013 and that it was approxiametly around winter as the weather and atmosphere is cold and dark. Aswell in this shot it has its first dialogue which sums up what is going on in the beginning opening two minutes reason it worked well is because it doesnt drag on and it gets straight to the point giving information which help the audience understand.

In this show have slight done a low angle show so that the effect we were trying to show would work. we wanted the girl to walk away and suddenly a figure appear behind but we needed her to be bigger than it so we need to look up at her to make her look aswell a bigger person and very brave. She has her hands in her pockets which means that she is walk casual through the
millpond oblivious to whats happening this brings tension to the audience as they know that something is going to happen as a mysterious no faced character is lerking behind her.
we did a close up shot of her feet walking which brought more tension as she picked up pace and that we was taken away from everything around her and to the fact that they had seen the mysterious figure the tension builds. We decided to put music into it to set the atmosphere and as we included music it fit the genre which was horror. We also added the effect of black and white which drained the colour out of the shots and made it look dull and scary it also brought more focus on the character and the sounds which were included.

This shot the girl has a feeling that somethings going on and someone is following her which means she stops suddenly and heistates and turns around this brings tension as anything could happen but we are unaware and so is she so it puts us into her shoes like we are part of the film. The fact that i chose a medium shots means that were closer to the character and more tension is built than taking a shot from a long distance it wont have the same impact.
As she continues to walk and we take a long shot and she walks the figure appears again it shows the audience that its following her and that eventually something is going to happen her but nothing can be done about it. we used this again because then audience will be on the edge of there seats because the second time we shown the figure it was closer to the girl than before which means that in a few more shot that something is going to happen.
As she turns around we put focus on her face as she has no emotion as you can see fear on her face and you know from the point to how close the shot is the minute she turns around something is going to happen to her so the tension has built up to the maximum and to the fact the 2 minutes is nearly over you know that any second now the figure will appear and do something.
she turns around and literally right infront of her is the figure we did an effect so that the girl was blurry and the figure is blurry this ment that the audience focused on that more and got to analyse it.
This is also a good shot because the audience dont know whats going to happen next and they can understand how she must be feeling the fear and tension in the shot

we ended the two minutes with a scream which you cannot see as we blackened the shot out so that its a mystery to what the figure decided to do to the little girl but as there was a scream it shows the audience that she was either screaming of fear or something was done during the blacked out part, this is a good cliff hanger to end the two minutes as it leaves the audience wanting to find out if she was killed. Then after few seconds of blacked out shot the title appears bold, worn, scratched away. It has a white font as it stands out with the background aswell the fact of using white font makes it look cold and it suits the theme of using the effect of black and white with each shot taken in the opening two minutes.

changes

characters

we had decided to change our characters as we want it to be more overwhelming that we scraped using charlotte caunter as the girl who was going to be attacked when walking home to samantha who is ages 12. Reason we chose samantha was that she was young, vunerable, unaware and bring more impact to the audience if a young innocent girl was taken than a 17 year old teenageer. We also got rid of connor musoke jones because we didnt need him as we didnt have a secure part for him and as the story line changed he wasnt needed.

storyline

we decided to change the storyline as before hand we was gonna to the shot afterwards that we had done instead of the sister emotional and thinking her sister was dead we thought that if we showed the girl being taking and went straight to the point and you saw it, it would be eye catching and bring the audience straight in and eager to proceed on watching. We thought that it would drag on and people would get confused if we did the one we planned to do if she was in her house ready to see a grave and police outside the house the audience would assume shes dead and would get confused.

setting

we changed the location to instead of having about 3 settings to one which was located at the millpond a area which has had real problems before hand and that its in the countryside and its empty and deserted makes it more realistic and scary. Some people who live around the area may be aware of where it is but on the other hand if they havent then people will be more scared. we used the effect of black and white to drain the colour out of the shots to make the atmosphere negative and with the tension of the music it will make people on there edge of the seats as the tension through the shots will keep there eyes on the opening two minutes throughout.

Sound

we chose to add music because making it silent throughout and the fact she is walking most of the time it may be boring and dragon a bit and it will confuse people. The sound effect will help fit the mood and the emotion and feeling that the young girl is feeling and get the audience to fit in to her shoes and really be apart of the opening two minutes. When we add the music in it will be of the stages that the pale one appears this means that the character (young girl) will be oblivious of its presence but we will know and the sound effects will make it more scary for us as we will expect that to the fact of it following her it wil eventually do something. We want the audiences hearts racing throughout waiting for something to happen but dragging it on will make it more tense which will win over them and make them continue watching after the two minutes.

audiences that will appeal to our film

We want our opening two minutes to hit a wide range of people so we need the quality and shots smooth and realistic. Our opening two minutes will be a genre of horror because that what a range people mainly enjoy watch it and it something that me and my friends would go out and watch than a romance or sci-fi. The target audience which the opening two minutes of the pale one will appeal to is teenagers between 15-18 and young adults the reason we want to aim for this area of people is that its a larger group and that me and reece are in the category so we will have a better idea of what that age range go out to the cinema to watch.

The gender that it will mostly appeal to our males because they enjoy being scared and having flashing images they enjoy fast upbeat tension action or horror films. On the other hand there are a variety of females that do enjoy horrors just as much as boys if we make the storyline strong then it may appeal to them if we add in characters and scenes that females enjoy like romance or emotional scenes then we can also get the females interested in the film. From looking at my opening two minutes i would personally watch something like that i think the impact and tension building up in the two minutes and how it ends is just a tease as you want to continue onwards with the film to find out what happened, where the girl went and if there will be anymore disappearances.

The opening two minutes will be set in leatherhead which means that it will appeal to people in the country and in the area than other countries as they arent familiar of the area and the stereotypes that will be shown. If we stick to typical stereotypes which everyone is common with then we can appeal to countries such as america as make it expand more will benefit us.

We will aim for middle class people because they are the people that can afford to go out and spend there money than going for working class which are unreliable that through the weekday we will get people out watching it. The reason aswell we chose to go for young adults is that teenagers wont be out on weekdays going to see a horror as they have school next day and they most likely will go see it at nighttime if they decided to go in the week and it may effect them if the graphic and scenes are tense and scary it.

We do not have a certain nationality which we are aiming it for we are going for everyone which means we cannot be racist or make any comment which will offend anyone. We have white british people as our character which is because they are reece or friends of ours. If we was to continue making the film we would include other nationalitys to make sure that we arent offending anyone.

the way that i will appeal to my target audience is to include things which they can relate to and will enjoy. For instance i know that my age range like to be scared which means jumpy tense scenes will be perfect. I also wanna include stereotypes which my target audience are aware of, so young innocent girl shy and unconfident. People like mysterious characters because its exciting as its not revealing anything. We also made our opening two minutes a horror because horrors are favourite as its scary due to gore and jumpy scenes they like to be kept on there toes and have a thrill and suspense when watching a film.

I personally love horror films and all my friends do, reason why is because that anything could happen and that the story lines are always interesting and exciting and very realistic. The characters are very attachable to know and the suspect like killer always is made over the top and put alot of thought and time into that i would leave a cinema or finish a film scared.

casino royale

casino royale audience which will appeal to more will be a male gender as it contains voilence as its mainly an action film which females dont tend to go for. Males like dangers and voilence as it looks challenging and is very exciting to watch. James bond films have also appealed to older generation as they have been filming for variety of years and there normal audience which have watched previous films will wanna continue on finding out the next storyline. Another target audience will be young generation as the effect and graphic are high standards and if they have watched previous films they will be used to the quality that the james bond films give off.

The casino royale is set in another country which means that it wont just be United kingdom that it will be aimed at it will also be american which means that it will have a larger audience and will benefit massively from it. There are different religions and enthicity shown in the film and they have stuck to a stereotype in the film of the white guy being the main character and the good guy and the black guy being the bad guy nasty and dangerous also causing distruction. The film have gained a western audience which is a larger.

The film is fast pace, tense music which is continuous throughout, flashing images, voilence and swearing which means that it wont appeal to young children or old people as it will be to inappropriate and it may be too much going on as the scenes are quick and edgy to keep the suspense and thrill which the film gives off.

middle class people will be the people to sell the film to because they can afford to go out and watch the film if the film aims for a audience likely able to watch the film the quantity will expand. They also want advertisement to be remarkable because with other competition they need there audience to be bigger because then they will most likely get the customers coming to watch there film than another.

editing footage

once we had completed filming our footage we went onto premiere elements 10 and begin to combind each shot taken together and add effects to make it realistic. The reason that we went on here was so then we can cut down shots that we dragging onto long merging two shots so the carried on perfectly without any noticeable jumps.

the first shot had dragged on and it would come across and slow and boring to the audience if we left it to its rawr shot. Not only did the shot drag on during the middle section of the shot samantha the person in character in the shot looked directly at the camera and smerked which didnt look professional so we cropped it to a section where it wouldnt appear.

we then realise that we couldnt cut the shot after so it would work well with the first shot so we use the effect of fade out and back in with a 2 seconds blackness between them so it gives the effect of time speeding up and getting straight to a different point further on in the footage. this showed creativity and gave good effect than watching her continuously walking til she gets to the point of when things begin to happen

In the second shot she walks closer to the shot and the camera follows her. We then use a ringtone which i had used from my phone at the time than adding it in through premiere elements this ment that it was more reliable to work and more realisitc. The phone rings and you see her answer the phone and turn.

we then cut the shot so that it looked as if the shot was one whole one but the shot afterwards was close up shot which ments that we had more focus on her as she was the main focus in this shot and we wanted to hear her speaking. The problem which may occur is that when she began to speak to turned and looked at the horizon. When editing you can hear her but you really have to be concentrating.

we only shot  her talking and stopped it we then went to a medium shot as we watch her put her phone away and walk past the camera. then we follow her as she walks further and further away. we then use the faded out and back in to combind the next shot as we change where we are standing with the cameras so we are facing her front ward. In this shot we made reece the (pale one) stand in an exact spot so when samantha is standing there you cannot see him but when she walks her appears. we took the shot from a low angle so that the effect would work. This gave a creepy effect and its shows the audience whos there but she cannot see him she is oblivious.

we then do a low angle/ canted angle of her feet walking this changed the scenary and put more tension at the point we may include some sound affect because the audience have seen that there is something behind her which means there will be tension and to fit the atmosphere some sound effects would work perfectly. we cut it down so the minute she stop the shot changes and she automatically turns and looks back this could do good with some sound effects nothing to much just faded sound that will blend in with the shot. #

testing out our own music

on the 17th january we decided to go into a music room and go onto the computers which was hooked up to the pianos and we got to test out sounds and make our own little pieces which would fit our 2 minutes. they had a variety of sound effects which could be chosen and different instruments used. I looked at each effect and there were some good ones to use but we would need to think of when to put it into our 2 minutes and what the tune would sound like it could be only a few seconds or could last the whole time.

me and reece didnt get that far because we had only filmed a few shots and i thought that the beginning would be great the a suspense with a creepy sound bring the character in while she walks up the path way and the cast names appear. Reece disagreed so we will need to sit down and discuss if we are going to include sounds or not because with out footage i think that not including it may drag on and becoming boring. Then the fact of a figure appearing the impact of the sound effects may make it better than without.

we will need to test it out more and take an hour of our time to make sure we have chosen the right effects sound in the right moments of the filming.

title

Our title is called the pale one and we want to emphaysis the title and make it really get the audience thinking when it appears on the screen and the only way we are gonna buy our audience is using the righ font and colour to send the right message and ideas.

font will need to be scary and rough and unusual so it stands out with the colour and the black background.  we also want the title to explain what sort of genre the film is through the font. If the title sells to the audience and the opening two minutes then they will be bound to continue on watching the rest of the film. We have chosen a font which has a static effect which relates to the key character the pale one.

colours that we are going to be using are simple white against black its simple but effective when it comes to revealing nothing and making it show the genre of the film. Black connotes dark and negative vibe. It can connote pain and fear as black usually appears in horror films such as dark scenes at night time set off a creepy tension atmosphere. Then the white is bold and shows a light and hope of happiness. But it can also make the text more important and the text will be saying the 'THE PALE ONE' which is mysterious and it will be intreging for the audience and make them want to continue on watching to find out why it has been titled the pale one and they will have some ideas of what it means but arent 100% sure of what the pale one is and why its the main focus in the film.

changes to the ideas and what we included in the footage

we didnt include the bag as a prop as we didnt think we needed to include to  many props as it would jsut be too much just the mobile which had use and she can just place the phone in her pocket and having to bring a bag to put it in. To the fact that we didnt include the bag we didnt need a shot of her stopping crouching to search in her bag which means that we will need to think of a brand new idea to make the two minutes successful. I think that not including it was a good idea as we didnt need to add it and i think that the shot would be boring and would drag on and give no interest to the audience at all.

We also didnt need to add in connor musoke jones and charlotte caunter. The reason that we didnt need connor was being we had changed the opening two minutes and we didnt have a purpose to include him but he was an option of including him. As well we didnt need to include charlotte because we decided to drop her from in the conversation of the phone call we didnt think it would work from taking a shot of her sister talking on the phone as it may confuse the audience and we want it to be understandable and simple that they will be hooked and it will be effective.

we decided to use only one setting because to many would just mean that in each shot that it would only be short scenes and it may be tooo complicated and confusing for the audience to get the understanding of what exactly is happening.

film diary

sunday around 2 pm we met with the cast of the opening two minutes and headed to the mill pond which is the setting which we decided to go through with using. We wanted to commit to sticking to the story board of each shot that was drafted.

we located ourselves at the further end of the millpond and began shooting, as it was at afternoon and there was people around we had shot some people in the distance which we wouldnt have had in the ideas as we was going to be shooting roughly around 4pm which in this time january would be beginning to get dark and people would be indoors it would be deserted. We changed our time of filming because we thought that it will be too dark for filming and the effect wouldnt work as people may not see the mysterious character appearing in the distance and we want the audience to obviously notice him so the tension would build quicker and stronger.

Our first shot we thought that it was going to be a long shot as you watch her get closer to the camera. The first shot that we took was in a greater distance which ment it took sam longer to get to the point which we was going to stop shooting so we took another take and made her move forward to a closer position of beginning to walk. Although it worked sam during the course of filming had smerked at the camera and come out of camera which means that we will have to retake that shot and cut and combind the other half of that shot so that the attention of the person noticing the camera will not appear in the opening two minutes.

We then decided to add an added in uncopyrighted music which was a ringtone from my phone which was used to indicate the audience that her phone was ringing. It was only for a short period of time but gave off a good effect. We changed the shot from medium shot to close up shot when she was having a conversation on the phone to bring the audiences attention to her. When that conversation was finished the shot was stopped and we changed the shot to a medium shot but during them when coming to edit them and crop them we realised that sam had moved her position of standing and when combinding them together it will literally just jump and will be obvious we will need to go back and reshoot that.

we have added on sounds such as wind and bird which when coming back to listen over is very vague than we thought which means that it had interrupted in the filming. We then added in a new shot where we look from a slight low angle of sam and as she walks past the camera mysteriously behind her underneath the street lamp in sight. The reason we decided to do this shot instead of it appearing in the distance while she was walking because that it would cause a jump from each shot of reece appearing to disappearing it wouldnt look natural and realistic. Another shot which was on the story board which we attempted to try was the sam walking past the tree from a side view and reece appearing and then disappearing it would also cause an obvious jump and wouldnt be believeable.

we did a shot from a low angle of her feet walking towards the camera its different from the shot taken and takes less focus off recent events thats happened kinda makes it more interesting than sticking to long to medium shots of her walking from a certain distance to towards the camera or past it.
